MEL for small nonprofits: measure less, learn more
You don’t need 40 indicators. A focused set of measures your team can collect well is worth far more than a dashboard no one updates.
Small organizations are often handed MEL frameworks designed for large international programs. The result: long indicator lists, exhausted staff, and data no one uses.
Instead, choose a handful of indicators that map directly to your logic model — typically one or two per outcome. For each, define exactly how it is collected, by whom, and how often.
Build in a moment to learn. A quarterly 60-minute data review, where staff look at the numbers together and ask “what’s surprising?”, will improve your program more than any report.
Finally, report back to communities. Sharing what you learned builds trust and often surfaces the explanations behind the numbers.
